Marie Erstad

Danish surface pattern designer and interior architect Marie Erstad creates hand-drawn patterns for wallpaper, textiles and interior products. Based in Copenhagen, her work is shaped by a Scandinavian sensitivity to light, colour and space, and a background in architecture that gives her patterns a strong sense of scale, rhythm and balance.

Marie often starts with pencil or charcoal sketches, building up layers of line, shadow and texture. Inspiration comes from everyday observations, from shifting Nordic light and natural forms to architectural structures, historical ornament and small details found in her surroundings. The result is hand-drawn patterns with a calm, tactile quality, designed to bring atmosphere and a sense of character to a room.

For Marie, using wallpaper and colour intentionally is a way of shaping mood and creating harmony through movement, depth and detail.

Her favourite Summer Gray designs are Voyage, Petit (Winter Blue), Folia (Laurel Green) and Junia (Pale Taupe), which she loves for their softness, layered linework and a tactile feel.
